COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State senior Tom Berry has been named the Mountain West Men's Golfer of the Month for September, the conference announced on Wednesday. Berry, who won the Ping-Golfweek Preview in September, earned his first career league honor and the first handed out by the conference this season.
The New Haw, England, native tied for sixth place at the season-opening Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational in Bremerton, Wash., on Sept. 17-18. Berry posted a 1-over 217 on the par-72, 7,124-yard Olympic Course at the Gold Mountain Golf Club to lead SDSU to a fifth-place finish.
On Sept. 23-25, the Aztec senior kept a tight hold on his first place standing on the leaderboard throughout the three-day tournament at the Golfweek-Ping Preview held at the par-70, 7,248-yard Crabapple Course at the Capital City Club in Alpharetta, Ga. Berry opened the tournament by shooting a 3-under 67 and was the only player in the field of 75 to cover 18 holes without making a bogey. On the second day of competition, Berry carded a 1-under 69 to remain in first place. On the final day of the tournament the senior fired off a 2-over 72 to finish play with a final score of 2-under 208 to secure the individual title and had the distinct honor of being the only player to finish with an under-par score. SDSU finished tied for ninth in the field of 15 teams.
San Diego State gets back onto the course on Oct. 15 as the team travels to Fairfax, Calif., for the two-day Alister MacKenzie Invitational.
