SAN DIEGO -

The San Diego State Novice 8+ boat took first place in its event at the season-opening Row for the Cure held on Mission Bay on Sunday, Oct. 28. The first place finish came in a field of four which included entries from the University of San Diego and Orange Coast College.

The winning Aztec rowing team consisted of Kendall Lyng (coxswain), Elisa Newton (stroke), Allison Litzinger (seven), Hillary Lupo (six), Molly Jacobs (five), Camille Dehne (four), Katherine Carrasco (three), Jennie Anne Imbsen (two) and Brooke Dye (bow).

In the women's open 8+ the San Diego State `A' boat took second place out of 11 entries. The only team to finish in front of the Aztecs was San Diego's `A' boat. The rowers taking second in the Open 8+ were Jennifer Miller (coxswain), Chelsee Brewster (stroke), Sarah Gannon (seven), Romaine Desclos (six), Vivianna Smith (five), Peggy Tio (four), Sophie Poser (three), Kaitlyn Goss (two) and Elizabeth West (bow).

Also taking second in its event was SDSU's Freshman 8+ squad, finishing in the runner-up position out of five boats.

"All boats had a solid first race," commented assistant coach Alison Abrams. "Our novice boats began rowing a little over a month ago so it's exciting that they can come off of their first race with a first and second place finish against other novice boats."

The Aztecs return to action this weekend as they travel north to compete in the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in Newport, Calif., on Sunday, Nov. 4.
