IRVINE, Calif. - San Diego State men's tennis' Andranik Khachatryan earned two wins on Sunday to advance to the semifinals of the consolation bracket at the USTA/ITA West Regional Tennis Championships. Khachatryan will continue play on Monday at Anteater Tennis Stadium on the campus of UC Irvine.
Khachatryan opened the day with a victory in the fourth round of the consolation bracket over Devin Barber (Cal Poly) by the score of 6-1, 6-4. The Burbank, Calif., native then battled USC's top freshman recruit Max de Vroome, who advanced to the final four of the 2012 Junior French Open, and was victorious, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8. Khachatryan now moves onto the semifinals and will face Cal Poly's Marco Comuzzo on Monday at 11 a.m.
In the quarterfinals of the singles main draw, Thorsten Bertsch earned a 6-0, 6-2 victory against reigning Big West Freshman of the Year Jacob Jung of UC Irvine. Bertsch was unable to advance to the semifinals though, as he dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Eric Johnson of USD.
Juan Florez, meanwhile, was victorious in the consolation bracket as cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win against Chris Meyers of Hawai'i, but just fell short of advancing as he suffered a 6-4, 6-2 setback to Comuzzo.
Spencer Simon, meanwhile, was unable to advance in the consolation round as he dropped a 7-6, 6-4 decision to Comuzzo.
