CLEMSON, S.C. -
San Diego State-Clemson Final Box
Evyn Hewett's Golden Goal in the 93rd minute lifted the San Diego State men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory at Clemson Friday night at historic Riggs Field. With their second straight win, the Aztecs improve to 6-6-2, while the Tigers fall to 5-8-3.
SDSU's shutout came on a night when both schools were facing each other 25 years after they clashed in the 1987 NCAA national championship game.
The fixture was well-played and even for the full 90 minutes. Both teams had their chances over the course of regulation, but neither side could find the back of the net.
In overtime, the action went back and forth in the opening two minutes, but just before the clock hit 93 minutes, the Aztecs started what would end up as the scoring and game-ending sequence. The ball found its way to the left side of the pitch where Blake Wise connected with Kevin Bick. Bick then sent in a ball that found Hewett, who positioned himself in the center of the box 10 yards from the goal line. The sophomore put a foot on the ball and it sailed over Clemson keeper Cody Mizell. The deciding goal was his second of the season.
San Diego State finished the game with a slight edge in shots, 14-11, and shots on goal, 4-1. Clemson, however, completed the evening with a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Hewett and John Pegg led the Aztecs with three shots apiece, and Wise added two of his own. All told, nine SDSU players recorded at least one attempt. San Diego State goalkeeper Blake Wise earned the victory and notched one save.
The Aztecs return to action next Friday, Oct. 26, when they start the second half of Pac-12 Conference action at Washington. First tap in Seattle is set for 7:30 p.m. PT.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Evyn Hewett is the Man of the Match after scoring the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute. Not only did the sophomore score the deciding goal, it was his and his backline teammates' effort that held Clemson to just one shot on goal and ultimately kept them off the scoreboard. Hewett finished the game with a game-high-tying three shots and played the length of the game. His goal was his second of the season and his seventh point.
