THIS WEEK
The Aztec swimming and diving team will travel to Stockton, Calif., this week to compete in the Pacific Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 19-20) at UOP's Chris Kjeldsen Pool complex. SDSU will compete against the host school and Brigham Young for the team title over the two-day meet. In addition, swimmers from UC Davis and UC Santa Cruz will be competing in Saturday's events. Action gets underway at 1:0 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 19) and at 10:00 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 20) morning.
HEAD COACH Mike Shrader
San Diego State head coach Mike Shrader is in his sixth season with the Aztecs and has compiled a dual meet record of 67-13 (.838) during his tenure. Shrader was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year each of the past three seasons (co-coach in 2009). Including eight seasons as the head coach at Nevada, his career record stands at 156-25-1 (.860).
MACKLIN EARNS SWIMMER OF THE WEEK HONORS
San Diego State junior Mikaela Macklin has earned Mountain West Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week honor for meets contested from Sept. 21-Oct. 7, 2012. It is the first career honor for Aztec junior. Macklin, a native of Placerville, Calif., won the overall title in the season-opening pentathlon against University of San Diego with a combined five-event time of 4:53.06. She followed up the pentathlon with a strong performance in an SDSU dual-meet win against UNLV with three individual wins and a second-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay yard individual medley.
RUIZ RECORDS PAIR OF SDSU TOP 10 TIMES
Freshman Natilee Ruiz turned in pair of times in her events at the dual meet vs. UNLV that have gone into the record book as being among the top 10 ever for an Aztec. Her mark of 1:51.26 against the Rebels ranks ninth on the SDSU list for that event while her mark of 2:02.99 in the 200 backstroke ranks 10th.
AQUAPLEX TIMES
In the meet against UNLV, SDSU swimmers had four times that ranks among the top 10 for the Aztec Aquaplex. Ruiz's marks of 2:02.9999 in the 200 back and 1:51.26 in the 200 free ranks as the fourth- and eighth-fastest ever at the facility. Jessica Crider's time of 1:51.37 in the 200 free ranks 10th while Meghan Zimmer's 52.20 in the 100 free ranks 10th as well. In addition, the 200 medley relay team of Chelsea Bailey, Katelyn Weddle, Gemma Johnson and Taylor Johnson went 1:45.72 vs. the Rebels, the eight-best time at the Aquaplex.
THE STREAK CONTINUES
With its victory over the University of San Diego last week, SDSU has now won its last 40 straight meets dating back to the 2009-10 season. Its last loss came against Wyoming on Jan. 29, 2010, in Laramie. San Diego State also has a streak of 51 straight wins against non-conference opponents. The last loss to a non-MWC team was a defeat at North Texas on Nov. 17, 2006. In current Head Coach Mike Shrader's four seasons at SDSU, the Aztecs have not lost a dual meet to a non-conference foe.
UP NEXT
Following the Pacific Invitational, the Aztecs will next visit Albuquerque, N.M. on Nov. 2 and 3 for triple dual meets against New Mexico, Colorado State and New Mexico State. The three teams will face off in dual meets on both Friday (Nov. 2) at 3:00 p.m. and Saturday (Nov.3) at 10:00 a.m.
