SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team moved up to No. 7 in the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. The ranking is the highest ever achieved by an Aztec squad since the program began in 1989. The Aztecs are also No. 13 in the Soccer America rankings and No. 8 in the Soccer Times poll. SDSU is the lone team from the Mountain West in all three polls.
"We are excited about the success of our team to this point in the season," head coach Mike Friesen said. "The recognition we have received is rewarding, however, we are focused on our process every day and that is leading to great results."
The Aztecs still also sit at No. 3 in the NSCAA Pacific Region poll, trailing only UCLA (2) and Stanford (1). Fellow MW member New Mexico is also in the rankings at No. 9.
San Diego State, which moved up to No. 17 in TopDrawerSoccer.com's field of 64, continued Mountain West play last Friday with a 1-0 road win over Boise State and then picked up a 3-2 victory at No. rv/--/23 Portland on Sunday.
SDSU's success resulted in an Aztec receiving MW Player of the Week accolades for the seventh week this season. Sarah Halverson garnered honors on Monday as the senior forward came off the bench to notch the game-winner in both contests this past weekend.
The Aztecs (12-1-1) returns to action on Friday when it continues Mountain West play at UNLV. The conference matchup is scheduled for a 7 p.m. PT start.
