San Diego State-Stanford Final Box
The San Diego State men's soccer team found itself on the short end of a 2-0 decision Sunday afternoon at Stanford. The loss dips the Aztecs' record to 4-4-1 overall and 0-2 Pac-12 Conference action. The Cardinal, meanwhile, improves to 4-5 (1-1 Pac-12).
SDSU played even with Stanford for the majority of the first half despite being outshot, 14-2, in the first 45 minutes. But as the frame was coming to a close, the Cardinal found the back of the net in the 42nd minute. Stanford's Austin Meyer found Eric Verso, who converted his attempt from the short corner, and the home side carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Facing a deficit, the Aztecs came out more aggressive in the second half, but were unable to find the equalizer. Much like the first 45 minutes, San Diego State kept Stanford off the scoreboard in the second half up until the closing moments. In the 89th minute, the Cardinal sent a cross, which bounced off an Aztec defender, and the beneficiary was Zach Batteer, who turned, shot and gave the game its final score.
At the final horn, Stanford outshot SDSU, 20-5, and finished with a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Cardinal also attempted nine corner kicks to San Diego State's five.
John Pegg had the Aztecs' lone shot on goal and starting goalkeeper Tim Peitsch ended with four saves.
San Diego State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 5, when it plays host to Washington. First tap at Montezuma Road is set for 7 p.m. PT.
MAN OF THE MATCH: John Pegg is the Man of the Match. The junior came off the bench and played 58 minutes, the most of any reserve. Pegg also logged the team's only shot on goal and was one of five Aztecs on the day to record a shot.
