FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The San Diego State volleyball team was shut out for only the second time this season as it dropped a three-set decision to Colorado State Saturday afternoon at Moby Arena in Fort Collins. In falling by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 25-18, the Aztec saw their record fall to 9-6 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West.
Summer Nash led SDSU with 16 kills and added a pair of blocks and four digs. Teammate Andrea Hannasch ended the match with 10 kills, a block and four digs as well.
Other team highs on the day included 35 assists by setter Johnna Fouch, 15 digs by libero Kristi Jackels and four blocks by Emily Harris.
San Diego State finished the three sets with 41 kills to 38 by the Rams, but hit only .123 for the match to CSU's .274. A total of 25 hitting errors compared to just nine by the home side helped led seal the Aztecs' downfall.
Colorado State (9-5, 2-1 MW) got off to a quick start in the opening set as it jumped out to an 8-3 lead before SDSU fought back to within a point at 11-10. But the Rams scored five of the ensuing six points and built their advantage to as many as eight points (21-13) before winning the contest by that same margin.
The second set was more of the same as the rams built an early 10-3 lead. The Aztecs could get no closer than four the rest of the way with the last time coming at 13-9 as the Rams eventually closed out the contest for the six-point victory.
Set number three again saw CSU take the initiative and open an 11-3 lead. The Aztecs managed to close the gap to three at 14-11, but the Rams again exerted their offensive superiority on the day to pull away and take the set by seven points to wrap up the match.
San Diego State will now return home when its hosts Fresno State on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7:00 p.m. on Aztec Court in Peterson Gym.
