SAN DIEGO -- The No. 12/17/13 San Diego State women's soccer team used a balanced offensive attack to start Mountain West action with a 3-0 victory over Nevada on Friday evening at the SDSU Sports Deck. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 10-1-1 and 1-0 in MW play, while the Wolf Pack drop to 4-6-1 and 0-1 in conference play.
Tiffany Hurst tallied the game-winning goal early on for SDSU at the 4:34 mark as the senior took a cross from sophomore Hannah Keane and buried it into the back of the net. The Aztecs scored again in the 28th minute as Keane took a pass from senior Rachael McGlinchy and headed in a beautiful shot for a 2-0 lead. SDSU then put the nail in the coffin at the 55:47 mark when junior Haley Palmer used a fantastic chest pass to set up senior Megan Jurado from deep on the left side. Jurado took the pass and fired an attempt that glided right into the upper right-hand corner of the net for the score.
SDSU jumped out to a dominating start against the Wolf Pack as it did against UCSB on Sunday. The Aztecs started off with consecutive shots that both could have easily connected. Palmer was first with an attempt that missed just wide. Hurst then gathered the miss and fired a shot that hit the post. After a shot from senior Marisa Fraticelli, Hurst finally found what she was looking for as she scored her second game-winner of the season.
The Aztecs held an early advantage, but didn't let up as they tallied another five shots that put Nevada goalkeeper Dana Moreno to the test. Then at the 27:03 mark, Keane was left open in front of the net and McGlinchy found her for Keane's second goal in 2012.
At halftime, San Diego State held an 11-0 advantage in shots (3-0 in shots on goal) and it controlled the corner kick battle by a 5-0 margin.
Nevada finally connected on its first shot attempt in the opening minutes of the second half. The Aztecs quickly responded with three consecutive attempts before burying the dagger in the 56th minute on Jurado's eighth goal of the season.
On the game, SDSU outshot the Wolf Pack by a 19-2 margin (6-2 in shots on goal) and also won the corner kick battle by a 7-1 advantage. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Boaz played 74:48 in net and notched two saves en route to her 10th win of 2012.
The Aztecs resume Mountain West play next Friday at Boise State. The conference tilt is set for a 3 p.m. PT start.
