ALPHARETTA, Ga. -- San Diego State men's golf senior Tom Berry, who was in first place heading into the final day of play, shot a third-round 2-over 72 to win the Ping-Golfweek Preview with a final score of 2-under 208. The Aztecs, meanwhile, finished in a tie for ninth place at the par-70, 7,248-yard Crabapple Course at Capital City Club in Alpharetta, Ga.
Berry wasted little time out of the gate on Sunday as he was the only player in the field of 75 to cover 18 holes without making a bogey. The New Haw, Surrey, England native added in a trio of birdies and never looked back as his first round score of 3-under 67 sent him to the top of the leaderboard. On Monday, Berry continued his stellar play as he carded a 1-under 69 including another three birdies to remain in first place. Then on the final day of the tournament, Berry notched one more birdie en route to winning The Preview. He was the only player to finish with an under-par score.
Freshman Riccardo Michelini, meanwhile, made a huge jump as he finished in a tie for 12th after starting the day in a tie for 29th. The Carpi, Italy, native shot a 2-under 68 on Tuesday to finish with a score of 2-over 212.
The rest of the Aztec lineup didn't fare as well as sophomore Xander Schauffele and freshman Robert Gojuangco both ended up tied for 54th. Schauffele shot a final round score of 2-over 72 to finish with an 11-over 221, while Gojuangco tallied a 4-over 74 to finish with the exact same score. Freshman Gunn Yang remained in a tie for 60th as he notched a 10-over 80 to finish at 19-over (229).
The Aztecs will now have a bit of a break before a trip to Fairfax, Calif., for the Alister MacKenzie Invitational from Oct. 15-16.
