RENO, Nev. - The San Diego State volleyball team got its 2012 Mountain west season off to an inauspicious start as it suffered a five-set loss at conference newcomer Nevada Saturday evening at the Virginia Street Gym In Reno. The Wolf Pack captured the match by set scores of 16-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 15-13.
With the victory Nevada won for the third straight outing and improved to 4-10 (1-0 MW) on the year while the Aztecs saw their record fall to 8-4 (0-1 MW).
San Diego State was led by the duo of Michelle Waber and Summer Nash who finished with 12 kills apiece with both players adding three blocks. Senior Andrea Hannasch had nine kills and a team-high six blocks as well.
Nevada's Janelle Batista led all players with 16 kills while teammates Tessa Lea'ea and Grace Anxo contributed 15 and 10 respectively.
The opening set saw SDSU score the first three points and lead the rest of the way as it built their advantage to as many as nine points as 23-14 before winning the contest by that margin. The roles were reversed in set two although it was a much closer contest as SDSU trailed by only two at 18-16 before the Wolf Pack scored seven of the final eight points to even the match at one set apiece.
The third and fourth sets were mirror images ins core as the Aztecs won the third contest 25-23 and Nevada took the fourth set by the same score.
The fifth and deciding set started out as a close contest as the teams spilt the first 10 points. From there, the Wolf Pack won the ensuing four points on a kill and three San Diego State hitting errors. Those lapses would prove costly for the Aztecs as they were unable to make up the deficit, only finally getting back to within one at 14-13 before Lea'ea blocked an SDSU kill attempt for the match-winning point.
SDSU will continues its conference road travels when it visits Laramie on Thursday, Sept. 27) for a league contest against Wyoming at 7:00 p.m. (MT) at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
