COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State junior football player Nat Berhe has been named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today. It is the second career weekly honor for the Colton, Calif., native.
Berhe, a defensive back, had a career-high 14 tackles, including 10 solo stops, to lead SDSU to a 42-7 victory over Army on Saturday. He also had one tackle for a loss and a pass breakup while anchoring a defense that forced three turnovers and limited the Black Knights to just 50 yards passing.
Berhe and the San Diego State defense held Army without an offensive score for its first nine possessions of the game before a Black Knight scored with 5:54 left to play in the third quarter. The touchdown snapped the Aztecs' streak of not allowing an offensive score at 16 possessions (also last seven at Washington), which was a total of 86:41 of clock time.
Berhe's 14 tackles were the second most in a game in the MW this season and tied for 16th nationally, while his 10 solo stops lead the conference and tie for the third-best performance among all FBS players.
In two games this year, Berhe leads SDSU with 22 tackles, including 2.0 TFL, a fumble recovery and a pass breakup. He is tied for second in the league and 29th in the country with 11.00 tackles per game.
San Diego State continues its three-game homestand Saturday when it plays host to North Dakota at 5 p.m. PT.
