SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A total of 17 members of the San Diego State baseball team are currently playing ball with summer league teams across the nation with two of them earning all-star honors with their respective leagues.
Outfielder Greg Allen, who completed his freshman year this past season at SDSU, was named to the Prospect League West All-Star Team while playing for the Quincy (Illinois) Gems. Allen is currently hitting .308 with four doubles, four triples and three home runs. He has driven in 24 runs and has been successful on 19 of 21 steal attempts.
Right-handed hurler Travis Pitcher, who will be a senior for the Aztecs this coming year, was named a first-team All-Star as a member of the Anchorage Glacier Pilots in the Alaska League. Pitcher has made 16 appearances including one start and has compiled a record of 2-2 with six saves and a 3.04 earned run average. In 23.2 innings pitched he has struck out 30 batters.
Other Aztecs having stellar summer campaigns include infielder Tim Zier, outfielder Avondre Bollar and pitcher Ryan Doran.
Zier is hitting .315 for the Eau Claire Express in the Northwoods League in Wisconsin. The SDSU second baseman has score 25 runs while recording nine doubles, a triple and home run in 44 contests.
Bollar is batting .293 with the Bethesda Big Train of the Cal Ripken League in Maryland. He has hit 10 doubles, a triple and four home runs while waking 24 times and driving in 15 runs in 33 games.
Doran, a teammate of Bollar's in Bethesda, has posted a record of 3-2 with a save and a 2.79 ERA in eight appearances including six starts. Most impressively he has struck of 44 and walked only eight in 42 innings of work.
