SAN DIEGO - The Seattle Sounders FC selected former San Diego State men's soccer standout Daniel Steres in the 2012 MLS Waiver Draft on Wednesday.
Earlier this year, the Calabasas, Calif., native was taken by Chivas USA with the ninth pick in the second round (28th overall) of the MLS Supplemental Draft.
Steres is the second Aztec to be drafted by Seattle in the last three seasons. In 2010, Jamel Wallace was a fourth-round pick of Seattle in the MLS SuperDraft.
In 2011, Steres was a first-team NSCAA All-Far West Region selection, a first-team all-Pac-12 pick and an honorable mention selection on the Pac-12 All-Academic team. A defender, Steres tied for second on the squad with 13 points on five goals and three assists, while leading the team with 1,759 minutes played. Steres, who was one of three Aztecs to start all 19 matches, also anchored a back line that finished the season with five shutouts.
The first two-time captain at SDSU since Raul Bautista (2005-06), Steres started 67 times over his 71 appearances in his career. He had 34 points on 13 goals and eight assists en route to earning all-conference accolades three times.
