SAN DIEGO -
Senior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) tied a career high with 13 strikeouts and redshirt junior Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) each had a two-run homer to give the San Diego State softball team a 7-1 victory over Boise State Sunday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (28-21, 7-2 Mountain West) will now have to win two of the three games next weekend at UNLV to claim their fifth MW title and an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
Micetich (14-7) allowed one run on three hits, all singles and all in the top of the second inning, over seven innings to pick up the victory in her final home game of her career. The right-hander retired the final 16 batters she faced, including 12 via strikeout. The 13 strikeouts tied her Feb. 12, 2009 total against Utah State, which was done over eight innings.
Jackson was 3-for-3 with a home run and a double for SDSU, which outhit the Broncos (34-17, 8-4 MW), 11-3. It was her ninth homer of the season. Over the three-game series with BSU, Jackson was 5-for-9 (.556) with a homer, three doubles and two RBIs.
Miles, meanwhile, was 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, two runs and a walk. It was her 16th homer of the season, which broke classmate Lorena Klopp's (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) single-season record of 15, set last year.
Junior Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) and freshman Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) each added two hits, including a double, and senior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) had an RBI single, was hit by a pitch and scored a run.
San Diego State's weekend series in Las Vegas gets underway at 6 p.m. PT Thursday.
