FORT WORTH, Texas - TCU got a complete-game one-hit shutout from Preston Morrison as it defeated San Diego State, 4-0, Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth. In evening the weekend series between the teams, the Horned Frogs improved to 34-17 overall and 17-6 in the Mountain West while SDSU's record fell to 24-31 (12-11 MW).
Morrison (9-0) allowed only one hit, a single up the middle by Spencer Thornton in the second inning as the Aztecs had only three base runners over the course of the contest. Thornton's single was preceded by Ryan Muno being hit by pitch and put runners at first and second with no outs.
But a failed sacrifice bunt, a fly out and a fielder's choice ended what would be the Aztecs' only threat of the game. SDSU's other base runner came in the top of the ninth when Greg Allen reached on an error by the TCU first baseman. In Between Morrison retied 22 batters in a row from the second through ninth innings.
Junior Ryan Doran got the start on the mound for the Aztecs and went four innings, allowing a lone run on five hits with a pair of walks and two strikeouts. That one run would be enough to saddle him with the loss as his record dropped to 3-6 on the season. In his last two outings, Doran has given up just three earned runs in 11.2 innings, but has come up on the losing end of the decision on both occasions.
TCU added its final three runs off Aztec reliever Ethan Miller, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth and once in the sixth off the junior right-hander to make it a 4-0 contest.
SDSU reliever Philip Walby went the final two innings and held the Horned Frogs scoreless despite surrendering five hits.
San Diego State and TCU will play the runner game of their weekend series on Sunday with game time set for 1:00 p.m. (CT).
