SAN DIEGO, Calif. - San Diego State jumped out to a 9-1 lead midway through the contest and went on to a 13-7 victory over Loyola Marymount Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The win ended a four-game losing skid for the Aztecs, who improved to 23-30 on the year.
Loyola Marymount (23-24) took the early led with an unearned run in the top of the second. A pair of one-out walks were followed by an error in left field that put the visitors up 1-0.
SDSU answered back one inning later, tying the contest with an unearned run of its own. Greg Allen walked with one out and stole second and third before a two-out error on a grounder to shortstop allowed him to score and make it a 1-1 game.
The Aztecs took the lead for good with three runs in their half of the fourth on an RBI double by Evan Potter, run-scoring single by Allen plus a balk with a runner at third. SDSU junior right-handed reliever Ethan Miller, who had come on to start the third inning in place of starter Mike Hachadorian, would be the beneficiary of those runs as he would eventually credited with the win to improve to 3-1.
SDSU's three runs in the fourth came against LMU reliever Sean McIntyre and he would take the loss to fall to 0-1.
San Diego State extended it advantage to 9-1 when it tallied five more runs in the next frame that began with a solo home run to left by Chris Wilson, his eighth of the season. The Aztecs scored their second run of the inning when Ryan Muno came home on an error by the Lions' shortstop on a grounder off the bat of Seby Zavala. A walk to Dillon Bryan and single by Tanner Reibenspies loaded the bases with Potter then lacing a two-run double down the right field line. Allen's second single of the game brought home the fifth run of the frame.
Loyola Marymount tried to get back into the contest with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh, but SDSU responded with four in the bottom of the same inning. Those came courtesy of a two-run single by Allen along with run-scoring singles from Tim Zier and Wilson to make the score 13-3.
The Lions added four more to their total in the top of the eighth, but that would be the end of the scoring as SDSU lefty reliever Mitch Bluman closed out the game in the ninth.
Greg Allen led SDSU's offense on the night with three hits and a season-high four RBI while Tanner Reibenspies turned in his first three-hit effort as an Aztec and scored three times. Evan Potter finished with two doubles and three RBI while teammates Tim Zier and Chris Wilson recorded two hits apiece.
San Diego will conclude its regular season with a three-game Mountain West series at 20th-ranked TCU this weekend that begins with a contest on Friday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. (CT) at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth. All three of SDSU's games against the Horned Frogs this weekend will be televised live on The Mtn network.
