Western Intercollegiate Final Results
The 10th-ranked San Diego State men's golf team finished out its final regular-season tournament by moving up to seventh place Sunday at the 66th Annual Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif. The Aztecs jumped one spot on the leaderboard with their final-round 373 for a 54-hole total of 71-over 1,121 at the par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course.
SDSU had three of its six golfers improve in the individual standings, including senior J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) who went from 50th into a tie for 33rd with his second 71 of the weekend. He carded 15 pars, two bogeys and one birdie on the par-3 fifth hole for a 12-over 222. This is the sixth time in 11 tournaments this season that Spaun has finished as the top Aztec.
Classmate Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.), meanwhile, dropped just slightly from 32nd to 36th place with a 223, after posting a team-best three birdies over the final 18 holes for a 75. Junior Tom Berry (New Haw, England) ran into some trouble on both his first two and last two holes of the day, combining for three bogeys and a double bogey, while also double bogeying the 16th hole to give him a 78 and a 17-over 227 to tie him for 50th.
Junior Cameron Tennant (Woodland Hills, Calif.) had a solid conclusion to his first event as a member of the SDSU starting five with a 74, moving him from 61st into 54th with a 228. Senior Alex Kang's (Oak Park, Calif.) second consecutive 78 knocked him into a tie with Tennant for 54th, while senior Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) closed with his best round of the tournament with a 75 to put him in 56th place, just one stroke in back of Tennant and Kang.
The top six in the team standings remained the same, as No 1 Texas earned a four-stroke victory over No. 14 Stanford with a 10-over 1060. The Cardinal, however, claimed the individual title by a two strokes with Patrick Rodgers (4-under 206) edging UCLA's Patrick Cantlay, who was the low amateur at last week's Masters, and day-one leader New Mexico State's Justin Shin.
San Diego State will have nearly three weeks to prepare to defend its Mountain West Conference championship, as the league tournament takes place at OMNI Tucson National Golf Course in Tucson, Ariz., May 4-6.
