Western Intercollegiate Day 1 Results

In a field with seven teams ranked among the national top 15, the No. 10 San Diego State men's golf squad finds itself in eighth place through 36 holes Saturday at the 66th Annual Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif. The Aztecs shot a first-round 369 to put them in a tie for sixth, but then added 10 more strokes to their total in the afternoon with a 379 for a 48-over 748, which puts them one stroke in back of Kansas and six behind No. 11 Oregon.

SDSU was unable to land one of its six golfers in the individual top 30 through two rounds on the difficult par-70, 6,615-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course. The Aztecs' top four players are separated by one to three strokes, as senior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) is the leader with an 8-over 148, highlighted by a 71, to tie for 32nd place. Featherstone carded one of just six eagles by the field on the day with that coming on the par-5 ninth hole in the second round.

Junior Tom Berry (New Haw, England) fired efforts of 74 and 75 to tie for 39th at 9-over 149, while senior Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) notched pars on 24 of his 36 holes, including 15 in the first round alone, but had a trio of double bogeys in the afternoon to drop him into a tie for 43rd place with a 10-over 150.

Senior J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.) matched the team's low 18 of the day with an opening 71, highlighted by five birdies. He then ran into early trouble in the second round going 8-over through his first nine holes before finishing with an 80 to move him to a tie for 50th with a 151. Senior Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) and junior Cameron Tennant (Woodland Hills, Calif.) rounded out SDSU's six-man line-up with identical 14-over 154s to tie for 61st place.

Top-ranked Texas is currently atop the team leaderboard at 4-over 704, which is nine strokes better than second place and 14th-ranked Stanford. New Mexico State's Justin Shin owns a one-stroke advantage in the individual race with a 3-under 137 and is one of just three golfers currently under par.

The 66th annual Western Intercollegiate concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. PT. Live scoring for is available on goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
