MORAGA, Calif. -
The San Diego State lacrosse team broke a 9-9 tied with a 3-0 run midway through the second half and held off a late rally in a 13-12 victory over Saint Mary's Friday in Moraga, Calif. The Aztecs improved to 5-9 on the season and 2-4 in MPSF play, while the Gaels dropped to 2-9 and 0-4.
With the scored tied at 9-9, Bailey Ewing, Isabelle Pickett and Jackie Mills each scored in succession to put SDSU up, 12-9, with 10:46 remaining. SMC answered with back-to-back goals, but Michaela Jarvis scored off a pass from Pickett with 4:21 for the eventual game-winner. Amanda Cross scored on a free-position shot for Saint Mary's with 1:52 left, but San Diego State held on for its fifth win in its first-ever season.
The game, which was tied, 8-8, at the half, featured seven ties and five lead changes. The Aztecs had a slight 33-31 edge in shots, while the Gaels owned a 19-11 advantage in ground balls and 14-13 edge in draw controls. Each team had 18 turnovers apiece.
Meris Walsh led SDSU once again with four goals on eight shots. Jarvis scored three times, while Ewing contributed two goals and two assists. Pickett had two goals and an assist, and Lauren Maack added three assists in the win.
Christina Ricciardulli had a team-high five draw controls, and Sammy Slattery and Nicole Pullano each recorded three ground balls. Additionally, Slattery played all 60 minutes in net and made nine saves.
San Diego State wraps up its regular season on Sunday at Stanford beginning at 1 p.m. PT.
