U.S. Intercollegiate - Rd.2 Results
Battling strong winds and rain, the ninth-ranked San Diego State men's golf team still managed to climb the team standings Saturday, moving from eighth into fifth place with a 36-hole score of 18-over 578 Saturday at the U.S. Intercollegiate in Stanford, Calif. The Aztecs posted a second-round 13-over 293, as none of the 17 teams in the field were able to break par at the 6,742-yard Stanford Golf Course.
SDSU senior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) logged his second consecutive 72 with two birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey to elevate him from 37th all the way into a seven-way tie for 17th place at 4-over 144. Junior Tom Berry (New Haw, England) matched Featherstone's 72, starting and ending the round with a birdie to vault him 22 spots up the individual leaderboard to 25th with a 145.
The Aztecs other three golfers, seniors J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) and Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.), are all tied for 36th at 6-over 146. Hoffenberg became the second SDSU player to eagle the par-5 first hole, but ended up giving those strokes back plus one just before making the turn with three consecutive bogeys and ended the day with a 4-over 74. Kang, meanwhile, was 4-over through his first five holes and only managed one birdie on the 11th hole for a 75. Spaun, who had the team's low round on Friday with a 70, also was limited to only one birdie and bogeyed five of his first nine holes before turning in a 76.
Oregon, which has three of the top four golfers, extended its lead from five to eight strokes at 4-under 556. Stanford's Patrick Rodgers utilized the home course advantage with a 3-under 67 to move from seventh into first by two strokes over Duck Eugene Wong with a 5-under 135.
The U.S. Intercollegiate concludes Sunday with San Diego State teeing off with Stanford and UCLA from the first hole starting at 8:45 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available on goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
