PING.ASU Invite Results - Rd.1

In a field with eight teams ranked in the top 20, the No. 45 San Diego State women's golf team finds itself in a tie for 15th place after the opening 18 holes Friday of the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. The Aztecs are knotted with fellow Mountain West member New Mexico at 18-over 302 on the par-71, 6,121-yard Karsten Golf Course.

SDSU junior Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.), who finished sixth at the same event a year ago, carded the team's low round of the day with a 74, highlighted by a pair of birdies to wind up in a nine-way tie for 43rd place. Classmates Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) and Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy), meanwhile, are just one stroke behind Wong with matching 75s. Clark bogeyed her first hole of the day, but then reeled off 10 consecutive pars before posting three more pars, a pair of bogeys, a birdie and a double-bogey on the par-4 18th. Knight had the most birdies of any Aztec with three, including two on a three-hole stretch on the front nine.

The squad's remaining two golfers, senior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and freshman Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.), were both at 5-over entering the final two holes of the day but each notched two straight bogeys to end the round at 7-over 78 to tie for 73rd.

Host and No. 5 ranked Arizona State is currently atop the leaderboard as the only squad under par at 4-under 280, which is four strokes better than second place No. 1 UCLA and No. 39 Stanford, who are tied at 284. There is also a tie for first place individually as UNLV's Bethany Calvo and ASU's Juntine Lee both fired opening 4-under 67s.

San Diego State will be paired with Washington and Oklahoma State for Saturday's second round, beginning from the 10th tee as early as 8:10 a.m. MT. Live results are available on goaztecs.com and golfstat.com
