The Aztecs (3-5, 1-3 MPSF) are coming off a 15-8 victory over Fresno State on Tuesday (March 20) behind five goals from Meris Walsh. SDSU spotted the Bulldogs two early goals, then came roaring back with nine of the next 10 scores to open a six-goal lead at the half (9-3) that it would never relinquish.
Sophie Koubek added three goals on four shots, while Bailey Ewing, Kelly Jones, Grace Korandovich, Olivia Lash, Jackie Mills, Madeline Ross and Christina Ricciardulli chipped in with a goal apiece. Sammy Slattery played all 60:00 in net and made 11 saves.
Walsh leads the team in scoring this season with 28 goals. She also tops the squad in points (28), shots (61), shots on goal (47) and free-position goals (9). Koubek (14 goals, one assist) and Ewing (seven goals, eight assists) each have 15 points, respectively, while Lauren Maack has 12 points on nine goals and three helpers.
Ricciardulli has team highs of 13 ground balls and 24 draw controls. Isabelle Pickett (18) and Koubek (13) each have reached double-digit marks in draw controls, while Lauren Paul has 11 ground balls.
Slattery is 3-5 with a 14.61 goals against average in 451-plus minutes in net and Katelyn Luker is 0-0 with a 14.81 GAA in 28-plus minutes.
SDSU will face a tough opponent in the Explorers, who come into the weekend with a 6-2 record. Last week, La Salle won on the road at Binghamton (14-12) and Villanova (13-9). The Explorers have played one familiar opponent as San Diego State in Oregon, who they lost to, 10-6, in their season opener on Feb. 19. The Aztecs, meanwhile, lost to the Ducks, 17-7, last Sunday in a MPSF match.
Lauren McDermott leads La Salle with 20 points on 16 goals and four assists. Melanie Sarcinello (14 goals, five assists), Caitlyn Brostrand (16 goals, one assist) and Claire Andrews (13 goals) have been the other top scorers for the Explorers. Megan Corliss has started seven of the team's eight games in net and is 6-2 with a 9.32 GAA over 469-plus minutes.
