SANTEE, Calif. - Senior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI's to give the San Diego State softball team a 9-0, five-inning victory over Charlotte and a split Friday at the San Diego Classic I. The Aztecs earlier lost to Fresno State by a 4-1 score and are now 11-9 on the season.
In the nightcap, Maeva had a single in the top of the first inning, a three-run homer in the second and a double in the fourth for three of SDSU's eight hits in the game.
Sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) had an RBI single, a walk and scored two runs, while freshman Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) (double) and sophomore Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) (single) each drove in a run.
The runs were plenty for redshirt junior pitcher Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif./Texas A&M). Arbino (4-3) struck out four, while allowing six hits (all singles) and four walks over the five-inning shutout.
In the opener, Bulldog (10-6) pitcher Michelle Moses one-hit San Diego State over seven innings in the 4-1 victory. Moses (6-4) finished with 10 strikeouts and three walks in the win.
Senior Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Mission Bay HS) had the Aztecs' only hit, a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth, and was hit by a pitch and scored SDSU's lone run. Miles (two) and Maeva (one) drew the team's walks in the loss.
San Diego State's best chance to come back in the game came in the sixth. Reifschneider broke up the no-hitter, then moved to second on a Miles walk and scored when junior Tiffany Corder's (San Clemente, Calif./UC Santa Barbara) sac bunt was overthrown by the Fresno State third baseman. After as strikeout, Corder stole second to put a pair of runners in scoring position with one out. Moses, however, got out of the jam by getting a strikeout and a groundout to end the threat.
Aztec junior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) took the loss after giving up three runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings. She struck out three without issuing a walk. Arbino replaced May (2-4) and yielded a run on three hits over 2/3 innings.
SDSU will continue its play in the San Diego Classic I on Saturday with games against Saint Joseph's (1:45 p.m. PT) and Nevada (4:15 p.m. PT).
