SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team allowed five unearned runs in the top of the third inning in a 6-3 loss to Harvard Thursday night at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs dropped to 16-15 with the loss, while the Crimson improved to 9-3.
Harvard scored its five runs in the third on five hits and two SDSU errors. The Crimson added an insurance run in the fourth and halted San Diego State's late comeback attempt.
Down, 6-1, the Aztecs loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Following a strikeout, senior Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) and redshirt freshman Iris Castaneda (San Diego/Sweetwater HS) scored when junior Kamerin May reached on an error by the Harvard second baseman. Freshman Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) loaded the bases again with a pinch-hit single, but junior Tiffany Corder's (San Clemente, Calif./UC Santa Barbara) line drive hit was right at the Crimson centerfielder, ending the threat.
SDSU took the lead in the first when senior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) hit a two-out solo homer.
Maeva and freshman Fiana Finau (San Diego/Hilltop HS) each had a hit and a walk, while Jordan had the only other hit for the Aztecs, who were outhit, 11-3, in the game. Sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) had her 11-game hitting streak snapped, but did walk to extend her reached base safely streak to 18 games.
Senior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) took the loss after allowing five unearned runs on six hits and a walk over 2 2/3 innings. She struck out two and dropped to 7-4 on the season. Redshirt junior Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif./Texas A&M) pitched the final 4 1/3 innings and gave up a run on five hits, while striking out four.
SDSU continues its play in the San Diego Classic I with a game against Purdue at 9 a.m. PT Friday.
