SAN DIEGO - The 15th-ranked San Diego State men's golf squad stays close to home this week when it resumes action at the 2012 The Farms Collegiate Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., March 12-13. The Aztecs are one of 14 squads in the field which will play two rounds Monday and the final 18 holes on Tuesday at the par-72, 6,947-yard The Farms Golf Club.
Head coach Ryan Donovan, who is in his ninth season at the helm, will bring seven golfers with him for the short drive, including the starting five of seniors J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) and Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.), as well as junior Tom Berry (New Haw, England) and freshman Wilson Bateman (Edmonton, Alberta). Senior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.) and junior transfer Cameron Tennant (Woodland Hills, Calif.) will compete as individuals.
SDSU is by far the highest ranked team competing this week, as only No. 34 Saint Mary's, No. 44 SMU and host No. 56 San Diego are among the national top 75. The Aztecs' other opponents include Connecticut, Fresno State, Missouri, Santa Clara, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Wyoming and Yale.
San Diego State is two weeks removed from claiming it first title of the year at the 14-team North Ranch Intercollegiate in Westlake Village, Calif., Feb. 27-28. The Aztecs won by five strokes over second place USD and had each of the top three golfers, including Hoffenberg, who claimed the first outright title of his collegiate career with a 2-over 212.
Day one action gets underway at the 2012 The Farms Collegiate Invite with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m. PDT, while teams play the final 18 holes starting with tee times from 7:27 a.m. until 9:33 a.m. on Tuesday. There will be no live scoring for the tournament, but daily updates and results will be available on goaztecs.com.
