MARINA DELA REY, Calif. - San Diego State got its 2012 season off to a fine start by winning two of three races against Loyola Marymount in a dual meet held at Ballona Creek in Marina del Rey Saturday morning.
In the first race of the meet, SDSU's Second Varsity 8 boat defeated the LMU entry by over two second. The Aztecs finished in 7:00 00 with the Lions crossing the finish line in 7:02.82. San Diego State was behind for much of the race, but came back to win it with a crew for that included Courtney Siemsen (coxswain), Sarah Gannon (stroke), Peggy Tio (seven), Alex Kudlicki (six), Chandler Cole (five), Darian Kimball (four), Erica Orgon (three), Alex Accornero (two) and Samantha Flores (bow).
In the Varsity 8 race, the Aztecs were could not come up with a win as the Lions finished in 6:56.28 compared to SDSU's time of 7:08.25. The crew for SDSU's Varsity 8 entry consisted of Jennifer Miller (coxswain), Chelsee Brewster (stroke), Kate Raymond (seven), Romaine Desclos (six), Vivianna Smith (five), Emily Watson (four), Sophie Poser (three), Marissa Shaw (two) and Lindsay Miller (bow).
In the Varsity 4 race, San Diego State's boast crewed by Samantha Stauber (coxswain), Cassie Wilson (four), Kaitlyn Goss (three), Veronica McLean (two) and Lizzie West (one) was victorious by a wide margin. The Aztec went 8:38.04 with the Lions' entry finishing in 8:57.68. San Diego State's second Varsity 4boat crewed by Emma Pack (Coxswain), Rae Backens (four), Lauren Parrett (three), Kayli Wagner (two) and Tara Kistler (one) was just .79 second behind LMU in the fight for second place in that race.
"I am proud of our team's performance today," commented SDSU Head Coach Jennifer Lewis. "It was a good way to open our season. I am looking forward to next week and improving on certain areas in our race plan as we gear up for the races against Sacramento State and Davis."
