SAN DIEGO - Trailing by nine at the half, the San Diego State lacrosse team scored four of the first five goals after the intermission, but the Aztec comeback effort wasn't enough as they fell to California, 18-9, Saturday afternoon on the SDSU Lacrosse Field.
The win allowed the Golden Bears to even their season record at 2-2 and improve to 2-1 in the mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Aztecs, meanwhile, saw their record drop to 2-4 overall (0-2 MPSF).
Cal got on the board quickly on a goal by Vail Horn just over 30 seconds into the contest, but SDSU answered right back as Sophie Koubek evened the score at 1-1 less than a minute later.
The Bears then put three straight goals on the board with Alexa Rozelle accounting for two of those. Rozelle would go on to score five times on the day to match teammate Megan Takacs' goal count of the match.
Aztec freshman Meris Walsh tried to get SDSU back into the game as she netted the first of her five goals at the 21:07 mark to bring the Aztecs within two at 4-2.
But Cal then scored seven unanswered goals before Walsh netted her second. One more Bear goal before time ran out gave the visitors a 12-3 lead at the half.
San Diego State came out for the second half and scored twice with Koubek and Walsh netting one each. A Bear goal broke the momentum temporarily, but SDSU then got two more goals from Walsh to close to within 13-7.
But that's as close as the home side would come five different players hit the net for Cal before late Aztec goals by Lauren Maack and Madeline Ross provided the final score line.
SDSU goalkeeper Sammy Slattery played the entire 60 minutes and made 12 saves while Cal's Megan McGinnis also had a dozen saves over 58 minute in goal.
San Diego State will continue is current seven-game home stand with a contest against Oregon next Sunday, March 18, at 1:00 p.m. on the SDSU Lacrosse Field.
