FULLERTON, Calif, - The San Diego State offense was limited to three hits and a walk by five Cal State Fullerton pitchers as the Titans defeated the Aztecs, 3-0, Tuesday night at Goodwin field in Fullerton. The loss dropped SDSU to 3-6 on the season while CSUF improved to 4-3.
Fullerton scored in the opening inning as Michael Lorenzen led off the game with a single up the middle wand was sacrificed to second. With two outs, David lofted a pop fly down the right field line that fell between three Aztecs for an RBI single.
San Diego State was held hitless over the first four frames until freshman Steven Pallares led off the top of the fifth with a single to left center field. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Greg Allen and went third on a passed ball with one out. But Fullerton lefty Tyler Peitzmeier struck out the next two batters to erase the threat.
The Titans doubled their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Austin Kingsolver led off with a bunt single, went to send on a ground out and scored on Lorenzen's two-out single through the left side of the infield.
Fullerton's final run in in the sixth as a single and a walk set the table for an RBI single by Matt Chapman to make it 3-0. All three Titan runs came against Aztec junior right-hander Ryan Doran (0-1), who was making his first start. Doran allowed those runs on seven hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. Aztec freshman Adam Anawalt tossed the final two innings allowing a hit with a walk and strikeout.
The win went to Titan starter Dave Birosak (1-0), who was designated to go only one inning (the first) during which he retired the side in order. Michael Lorenzen, who started the game in center field, came on to pitch in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and runners at second and third thanks to a Titan error and double by pinch hitter Spencer Thornton and recorded the final out to notch his third of the season.
San Diego State now returns home to host the annual Aztec Invitational presented by Sheraton Mission Valley. The Aztecs open play on Thursday (March 1) against Cal Poly at 7:00 p.m. Earlier that day, Milwaukee will take on San Francisco (11:00 a.m.) followed by San Diego facing Cal State Northridge (3:00 p.m.).
