ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Sophomore Allison Reaser (60-meter hurdles), sophomore Shanieka Thomas (triple jump) and senior Whitney Ashley (shot put) each won individual events to lift the San Diego State track and field team to a third-place finish at the Mountain West Indoor Championships Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M. The Aztecs' third-place showing matched their best finish since 2004, when they were second.
SDSU ended up with 97 points, trailing only TCU (141) and host New Mexico (116). UNLV (88) was fourth, followed by Boise State (69), Colorado State (66), Air Force (58) and Wyoming (27).
Reaser won the meet's High Point Award, totaling 27.7 points. Today, Reaser won the 60 hurdles in 8.48 seconds, took fifth in the 200 (24.53) and was a member of the sixth-place 4x400-meter relay (3:48.75). It was a busy week for Reaser, who won the pentathlon (five events) on Thursday and took sixth in the long jump on Friday. Including preliminary events, Reaser competed in 11 events over the three days.
Thomas, who was the only athlete in the country to qualify for the NCAA championship meet in the triple jump heading into this weekend, won the event today with a leap of 43 feet, 1 ¾ inches. Thomas took third in the long jump on Friday.
Ashley continued her dominance in the shot put, winning the event with a toss of 54-09.25, more than four feet farther than the runner-up finisher Kelsey Samuels of TCU (50-06.75). Ashley, who was fourth in the weight throw on Friday, has won the shot put in all four meets she has competed in this year. Ashley will stay in Albuquerque, N.M., to compete in the shot put at the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships on Sunday.
Junior Alex Evans finished third in the triple jump with a leap of 41-03.75, the fifth-best indoor mark in program history, and took seventh in the 60 hurdles (8.83). Redshirt freshman Jasmine Burrell was fifth in the shot put (48-00.50), while junior Josefine Koskinen came in eighth in the 800 (2:13.62).
Reaser and Koskinen were joined on the 4x400-meter relay team by sophomore Maderia Toatley and freshman Maya Carter. The quartet finished sixth in 3:48.75, the ninth-fastest indoor time in program history.
