CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. -
The San Diego State softball team scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning but it was too little, too late in a 6-4 loss to Iowa State Saturday at the Cathedral City Classic. The Aztecs dropped to 8-7 with the loss, their first against a team this season that wasn't nationally ranked or receiving votes, while the Cyclones improved to 4-9.
Trailing, 6-1, after six innings, SDSU put up three runs to close the gap. With the bases loaded and one out, sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) doubled to right field to score redshirt freshman Wendy Tamayo (San Diego/Mater Dei Catholic HS) and freshman Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS). Junior Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) followed with a sacrifice fly to left field that scored sophomore Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.), but ISU pitcher Tori Torrescano got junior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) to ground out, ending the game in favor of Iowa State.
San Diego State got its first run in the fourth when redshirt junior pinch runner Roshana Lavery (San Diego/Mission Bay HS) scored from second base on a Cyclone error that allowed freshman Fiana Finau (San Diego/Hilltop HS) to reach first base.
The Aztecs managed only three hits off Torrescano. Miles and Kamerin May had doubles, while senior Ashley Rose (Antioch, Calif.) singled.
Torrescano homered twice and drove in four runs to lead ISU.
Kamerin May (2-3) took the loss for SDSU after allowing three runs on three hits and a walk in 1/3 of an inning. Senior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits over the final 5 2/3 innings of relief. She struck out nine and walked two.
San Diego State wraps up its play in the Cathedral City Classic Sunday with games against No. 14/15 Stanford (1 p.m. PT) and Cal State Northridge (3 p.m. PT).
