OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The San Diego State swimming and diving team finds itself in second place after the first three days of competition at the 2012 Mountain West championships in Oklahoma City. With seven events reaming to be contested on Saturday, the Aztec trail Boise State by just three points.

The Broncos have a three-day total of 506 points while SDSU's team score stands at 503. ULNV sits in third place with 379.5 points followed by Wyoming (302.5), TCU (238), New Mexico (232), Colorado State (204) and Air Force (129).

The day began with the 200 free relay as the DSU team of Chelsea Bailey, Stephanie Koch, Leona Jennings and Mikaela Macklin finished fourth in 1:31.86, the second-fastest time in school history.

In the 400 individual medley, junior Melanie Garibaldi set a new Aztec record with a time of 4:16.75, good for second place. Macklin's mark of 4:19.51 (fourth place) is the second-best time eve by an Aztec while Amana Barrett (ninth place) went 4:21.09 for the third-fastest time in program history.

The trio of Gemma Johnson (53.71), Berklie Oscarson (550.1) and Loreen Whitfield (55.47) took the top three spots in the `B' final of the 100 butterfly. I the process, Johnson set a new San Diego State record in the event.

Kelly Marquenie was the Aztecs' top finisher in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:49.18. Right behind her were teammates Dana Michaels (1:49.35) and Meghan Zimmer (1:49.92) as the trio finished sixth through eighth in the `A' final.

San Diego State's first individual champion of the meet came in the 100 breaststroke as junior Katelyn Weddle finished first with a time of 1:00.83. It marked the third time in three years that Weddle won the event.

The day's final event, the 100 backstroke, saw SDSU's Leona Jennings capture second place in 54.28. Chelsea Bailey's time of 55.44 in the race goes into the Aztec record book as the fourth-best time by an SDSU swimmer.

The 2012 Mountain West Championship final day gets underway Saturday morning (Feb. 23) at 11:00 a.m. (CT) with prelims in the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and platform diving. The finals of those five events along with the 1650 freestyle and the 400 free relay will commence at 6:00 p.m. that evening.
