CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team dropped a pair of games against top-10 teams Thursday night at the Cathedral City Classic. The Aztecs (7-6), who are receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball national polls, lost to No. 6/6 Oklahoma, 5-0, in the opener before falling to No. 8/8 Texas, 2-1, in the nightcap.
All six of SDSU's losses this season have been against teams that made last year's NCAA tournament, while five have come against nationally ranked teams. Additionally, five of the six losses have been by one run.
In the opener, the Sooners (8-1 with a win later against UC Davis), took advantage of a San Diego State error to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning en route to the 5-0 win. OU's big inning began when Javen Henson and Kelley Reeves each got on base on back-to-back two singles with two outs. Brianna Turang hit it at Aztec senior pitcher Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.), who threw the ball away. All three runners, including Turang, raced around to score and put Oklahoma up, 3-0.
RBI singles by Lauren Chamberlain in the fourth and Reeves in the sixth gave the Sooners the 5-0 win.
Senior Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) had three of SDSU's five hits, while redshirt sophomore Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) and sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) also had a single.
Micetich (4-2) took the loss after allowing four runs (one earned) on four hits and a walk over four innings of work. She struck out three. Junior Kamerin May (Corona, Calif.) pitched the other two innings and yielded a run on two hits, while striking out one.
In the nightcap, Karina Scott doubled to right-center field in the bottom of the seventh to score Taylor Thom and Mandy Ogle to give the Longhorns (10-0) the walkoff 2-1 victory.
San Diego State had taken the lead in the sixth when senior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) singled home Miles with two outs.
Aztec redshirt junior pitcher Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif./Texas A&M) then got out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth when UT's Brejae Washington led off with a single, stole second and got to third on a San Diego State throwing error. But Arbino struck out Lexy Bennett (swinging) and Courtney Craig (looking), and got Nadia Taylor to pop up to Miles at shortstop to end the threat.
After a 1-2-3 top of the seventh by the Aztecs, Scott ended the game with a one-out double. It was the second walkoff loss by SDSU this year.
Reifschneider finished her 4-for-5 night with a single against Texas.
Arbino (1-2) took the loss after giving up two runs over 6 1/3 innings. She struck out a season-high seven batters, and allowed six hits and two walks.
San Diego State returns to action Friday with another late start, an 8 p.m. PT contest against New Mexico State.
