SAN DIEGO - San Diego State crew team will kick off its 2012 spring season underway this Saturday, Feb. 25, with a scrimmage against Orange Coast College (OCC), and local rivals University of San Diego (USD) and UC San Diego (UCSD) on Mission Bay in San Diego. The scrimmage will run from approximately 8-10am on Saturday February 25. Due to the large number of teams/boats attending, the scrimmage will take place on various areas of the bay.
Team captains Julie Moyer and Romaine Desclos are extremely pleased with the overall team morale and the collaborative effort from our rowers this year. After a successful fall, the rowers returned to the water in January, focused and aware of goals for the season.
"Each season we hope to improve from the previous, but out of our years on this team, we know this squad is hungrier than any team we have ever been on," commented Moyer. "We are aware of the challenges that lie ahead of us, but know that with greater practice comes greater confidence."
"Our ultimate goal is to get a top place finish at our championship race in May for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA)," note Desclos. "Each day we see the banners that hang in our ERG room of previous top place finishers from SDSU and we are reminded of our goal. Before we graduate, we want our names, as well as the other athletes on this squad on that wall of WIRA Banners. For now, our short-term goal is this weekend's competition with OCC, USD, and UCSD. We believe the scrimmage will be our first test to gauge our progress, and help us moving forward towards the WIRA championships in late April."
San Diego State's first official meet of the spring season is scheduled for Saturday, March 10, when it will travel to Marina del Rey to face Loyola Marymount. The Aztec's first home action in San Diego will come when they compete in the annual San Diego Crew Classic during the weekend of march 31-April 1 on Mission Bay.
