SAN DIEGO -
UC Davis at San Diego State Final Box
The San Diego State women's lacrosse team opened Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Sunday and was downed by UC Davis, 18-7, at Aztec Lacrosse Field. SDSU falls to 1-2 (0-1 MPSF) on the season, while the Aggies improve to 1-0 (1-0 MPSF).
UC Davis put San Diego State in an early hole by scoring the first three goals of the game before the Aztecs' Madeline Ross dented the scoreboard for the home side. The Aggies, however, responded with two more goals to take a 5-1 lead.
SDSU settled down and began to find its rhythm offensively as it scored three of the game's next four goals. Jackie Mills found the back of the net with 18:23 left in the first half to bring the Aztecs to within three. UCD scored 23 seconds later, but San Diego State's Meris Walsh and Sophie Koubek scored back-to-back goals to make the score, 6-4, in favor of the Aggies. UC Davis ended the half with a pair of goals in the final 11:15 and the Aggies enjoyed an 8-4 at halftime.
The initial 10 minutes of the second half were scoreless until Koubek and the Aztecs took advantage of a power-play opportunity. Koubek notched her second goal of the afternoon and San Diego State trailed, 8-5, with 20 minutes left in regulation.
The Aggies doubled their lead with two goals to lead 10-5, but Walsh scored an even-strength goal with 11:53 to play. Like it had for most of the game, UC Davis responded with two more goals to move ahead, 12-6. Walsh, however, kept San Diego State in the game with her third goal of the game with just over eight minutes left.
Trailing 12-7, SDSU was unable to find the back of the net the rest of the way. UC Davis, however, ended the game with six unanswered goals to provide the final 11-goal margin.
The Aztecs continue their homestand next Friday, March 2, when they play host to Saint Mary's. Game time is set for 7 p.m. PT at Aztec Lacrosse Field. Admission is free.
