SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning and then held off a late Oregon State rally in a 7-6 victory Friday night in the 22nd annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium. The win, coupled with a 8-3 victory earlier in the day against Notre Dame, moved the Aztecs to 5-3 on the season, including a 3-3 mark against teams who are either nationally ranked or receiving votes.
The Fighting Irish (0-2) is receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball national polls, while the Beavers (4-3) and SDSU are receiving votes in the former and the latter, respectively.
With the international rule in effect, San Diego State put up three runs in the top of the ninth, an inning after scoring a solo run that was answered by OSU. Juniors Kristin May (Corona, Calif.) (single) and Kamerin May (groundout), and sophomore Hayley Miles (Antelope, Calif.) (sacrifice fly) each had an RBI to put the Aztecs up, 7-4. Oregon State responded, however, with a two-run homer by Erin Guzy in the bottom half, before SDSU redshirt junior pitcher Rebecca Arbino (Clovis, Calif./Texas A&M) came off the bench and retired the Beavers in order to earn her first save at San Diego State.
Sophomore Katie Mathis (Grass Valley, Calif.) had two hits to pace the Aztec offense, while Miles, redshirt sophomore Patrice Jackson (Kansas City, Mo.) and freshman Kayla Jordan (San Diego/Bonita Vista HS) each had an RBI and a run scored. Senior Felicia Reifschneider (San Diego/Morse HS) and sophomore Lorena Klopp (San Diego/Steele Canyon HS) also drove in a run for SDSU.
Senior Bailey Micetich (Woodland, Calif.) got the win after allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits over eight innings. She struck out six and walked one to improve to 3-1 on the year.
In the opener, San Diego State scored eight times over the first three innings and then held the Notre Dame scoreless the rest of the way en route to an 8-3 victory.
Miles led the Aztecs with a 2-for-3 outing, including a three-run homer and a double, while senior Justeen Maeva (San Diego/Mira Mesa HS) and freshman Fiana Finau (San Diego/Hilltop HS) each added home runs. Miles, meanwhile, was joined in the two-hit club by Finau, Kristin May and Jordan.
Arbino (1-0) went the distance in the circle for SDSU, yielding three runs on eight hits and a walk. She struck out five to pick up her first victory at San Diego State.
The Aztecs continue their play in the Campbell/Cartier with Saturday games against Central Florida (1 p.m. PT) and UC Davis (3:30 p.m. PT).
