The San Diego State men's golf team opened its 2012 spring schedule by carding an opening round 6-over 294 on Monday at the San Diego Intercollegiate presented by Lamkin Grips and TaylorMade Golf. The Aztecs were in third place after the first 18 holes, but have since fallen back to sixth with as many as three holes still left to complete in the second round, which was suspended due to darkness at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club.
SDSU freshman Wilson Bateman (Edmonton, Alberta) was one of just six players to complete the first 18 holes under par, finishing at 1-under 71 to tie for third place, just one stroke off the lead held by USC's Martin Trainer and Washington's Chris Williams. Bateman had five birdies and was at 3-under through 10 holes, but then notched three bogeys to drop back to even par. He has two holes left to complete in the second round and is at 5-over with one birdie and two double bogeys.
Three Aztecs tied for 17th place at 2-over 74, including senior J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), junior Tom Berry (New Haw, England) and senior Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.), who is competing as an individual and had one of three eagles among 84 competitors in the first round. SDSU senior Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) was in one of only three pairings to finish the second round, notching a 79 after coming in with a 75 in the morning.
Aztec senior Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.) managed just one birdie through the first 18 holes to fire a 4-over 76, while junior Evan Emerick (Oceanside, Calif.) and newcomer Cameron Tennant (Woodland Hills, Calif.) both completed their first two rounds of the season to stand at 9- and 16-over, respectively.
Washington was atop the team leaderboard through 18 holes at 4-under 284, followed by Southern California which was four strokes back at even par.
Teams will finish out the second round beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT on Tuesday with the final 18 holes, featuring a shotgun start, immediately following. Live scoring is available via golfstat.com.
