PALO ALTO, Calif. -
The San Diego State lacrosse team fell to No. 18/20 Ohio State, 19-4, in the program's first-ever game Saturday in Palo Alto, Calif., on the campus of Stanford.
Lauren Maack (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS) scored just 22 seconds into the game to give the Aztecs (0-1) the early lead. The Buckeyes (1-0), however, responded with eight straight goals over the next 11:43 to take an 8-1 lead with 17:55 left in the first half. Maack tried to get SDSU back in the match with a goal with 16:54 left, but OSU pulled away with six more goals to open up a 14-2 lead at halftime.
San Diego State allowed only five goals in the second half and scored two - Jackie Mills (Encinitas, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) and Meris Walsh (Easton, Md./Maryland) - but took the 19-4 loss in its first game.
Maack and Walsh also paced the Aztecs with five shots apiece.
Sophie Koubek (Rockville, Md.) led SDSU with three draw controls and Christina Ricciardulli (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) had a team-high three caused turnovers.
Sammy Slattery (Carlsbad, Calif./Palomar College) played all 60 minutes in net and had nine saves. She also led the squad with four ground balls.
San Diego State plays host to Cincinnati at 7 p.m. PT Friday in the team's first-ever home game. Admission is free to all Aztec home matches.
