SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Javier Pulgar has been named the Mountain West Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday afternoon. This marks the first time Pulgar has received the award and the first time an Aztec has been honored this season.
A native of Madrid, Spain, Pulgar went a combined 3-1 last Sunday as the Aztecs picked up victories against No. 47 Cal Poly (W, 5-2) and UC Riverside (W, 7-0). In SDSU's first match of the day against the Mustangs, Pulgar tallied a 6-2, 6-2 win over Brian McPhee at the No. 1 singles position.
He returned to the court later in the day against the Highlanders, adding two more victories to his record. After teaming with Hunter Nicholas to knock off the tandem of Austin Andres and Felix Macherez, 8-1, at the top of the doubles lineup, Pulgar went on to post a 6-0, 6-3 win Macherez at the No. 1 singles spot.
Pulgar and SDSU return to action Friday, Feb. 3, when they travel to Irvine, Calif. for a match against UC Irvine. First serve is set for 1 p.m. PT.
