MALIBU, Calif. - The No. 53 San Diego State women's tennis squad battled 30 mile-an-hour winds all day and ultimately dropped a 4-3 decision at No. 26 Pepperdine Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Aztecs fall to 0-1, while the Waves improve to 1-0.
SDSU started the day on a strong note by claiming an early 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches. Laura Antonana Iriarte and Emma Cioffi paired up to defeat Alejandra Granillo and Megan Moore, 9-7, at the third spot. Then Alicia Aguilar and Julia Wais wrapped things up with their 9-8(4) victory at No. 2 over Arianna Colffer and Ali Walters.
Pepperdine knotted the score at 1-1 when Khunpak Issara defeated Cioffi in straight sets at second singles. Walters later gave the Waves the lead when she downed Aguilar at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1.
San Diego State leveled the score when Wais notched a victory over No. 72 Granillo, 6-3, 6-2. Pepperdine, however, went on to post wins at Nos. 6 and 4 to secure the decision.
Antonana Iriarte provided the Aztecs with their final point after dismissing Colffer, 3-6, 6-4, 10-7.
The Aztecs are back in action on Saturday when they play host to UC Riverside at 9 a.m. PT before welcoming Cal State Fullerton at 4 p.m. PT. Both matches will be contested at Aztec Tennis Center.
