SAN DIEGO - Two San Diego State men's soccer players have been selected in the 2012 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft, which was held Tuesday. Daniel Steres (Calabasas, Calif.) was picked ninth in the second round (28th overall) by Chivas USA, while Justin Davies (San Diego/Brooks School (Mass.)) was taken 19th in the fourth round (76th overall) by the LA Galaxy.
Last season, Steres was a first-team NSCAA All-Far West Region selection, a first-team all-Pac-12 pick and an honorable mention selection on the Pac-12 All-Academic Team. A defender, Steres tied for second on the squad with 13 points on five goals and three assists, while leading the team with 1,759 minutes played. Steres, who was one of three Aztecs to start all 19 matches, also anchored a back line that finished the season with five shutouts.
The first two-time captain at SDSU since Raul Bautista (2005-06), Steres started 67 times over his 71 appearances in his career. He had 34 points on 13 goals and eight assists en route to earning all-conference accolades three times.
Davies, meanwhile, appeared in all 19 matches last year, starting 16 times. The midfielder/defender had one goal, which was the game-winner against Manhattan on Sept. 9, for two points. Six of his 11 shot attempts were on net. The .545 shot on goal percentage was tops on the team (minimum 10 shot attempts).
Over his career, Davies started 59 matches and played in 71 games. He scored four times and added three assists for 11 points, twice earning all-Pac-12 honors (2009 and 2010).
San Diego State currently has two former players in the MLS, including two-time All-American Tally Hall and all-Pac-12 player Steve Beitashour. Last season, Hall had six shutouts en route to leading the Houston Dynamo to the MLS Cup, where it fell, 1-0, to the Galaxy. He also was named a MLS All-Star. Beitashour started all 19 games he appeared in last year with the San Jose Earthquakes, leading the team with seven assists.
