COLORADO SPRINGS - San Diego State sophomore Kelly Marquenie and senior Kristen Meier have been named the Mountain West Swimmer and Diver of the Week respectively for their performances from Jan. 2-8, 2012. For Marquenie, it is the first weekly honor of the season and the third of her career. Meier has earned the diving honor four times this season and the eighth of her MW career.
The Aztecs picked up four dual wins last week, hosting TCU, Rice, UC San Diego and Washington State in a five-team meet on Jan. 6.
Marquenie, from Gold Coast, Australia, won two individual events and swam the lead leg of the 400-yard relay. Marquenie won the 1000-yard freestyle race with a time of 10:00.03, the top time in the Mountain West, and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:54.76. The 400-yard relay team posted a winning time of 3:27.64, the eighth-fastest in school history.
Meier, from Walden, N.Y., took first place in the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events. She won the 1-meter dive with a score of 307.60 and the 3-meter with a 355.60 mark, the top score in the Mountain West this season. Her 3-meter score was also a new San Diego State and Aztec Aquaplex record, breaking the previous bests that she had set earlier this season.
Up next for the Aztecs is a trip to central California where it will face Fresno State and Cal State Bakersfield in a double dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 14, at noon at the Fresno State Aquatics Center.
