SAN DIEGO -
2011 Conoco MWC Women's Championship Bracket in PDF Format
The San Diego State women's basketball team has earned the No. 6 seed for next week's 2011 Conoco Mountain West Conference Championships at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev. The Aztecs will face the No. 7 seed New Mexico Lobos for the sixth time in MWC tourney history on Tuesday, March 8, beginning at 7 p.m. PT.
SDSU, which is 12-16 overall, finished the 2011 conference campaign in sixth place in the league standings at 6-10. The Lobos, meanwhile, ended up in seventh place at 5-11 with two of those losses coming against the Aztecs.
San Diego State has advanced to each of the last three Mountain West Conference championship games, winning a year ago in overtime vs. Utah to also claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAAs. The Aztecs are 6-2 in the championship over the last three seasons, after going 0-8 in the previous eight years of the tournament's existence.
The last time SDSU earned the No. 6 seed was in 2009, when it upset No. 3 Wyoming and No. 2 TCU to advance to the championship match-up where it fell to New Mexico by a slim three-point margin. The tournament format has since been changed with the top two seeds getting byes into Friday's semifinals and the No. 3 seed advancing straight into the quarterfinals. The No. 4 through 9 seeds now need to win four games over a span of five days to walk away with the title.
The winner of Tuesday's outing will face No. 3 seed Wyoming on Wednesday at 7 p.m. PT in the second of two women's quarterfinals. SDSU dropped both regular-season contests to the Cowgirls, but have a current two-game win streak in the MWC tournament against them.
All games after the first round, except the championship, will be carried live on The Mtn. The title game on Saturday at 1 p.m. will be broadcast live on VERSUS. Chris Ello will have the live radio call on XTRA Sports 1360 AM in Las Vegas.
