Aztecs Welcome Thunderbirds to Montezuma Mesa
* San Diego State, which is receiving votes in the preseason AP Top-25 Poll, looks to stay undefeated in the early going as it plays host to Southern Utah at the Basketball Travelers Classic. The Aztecs and Thunderbirds each won their respective season-opening games on Friday at Viejas Arena.
* SDSU won its seventh straight season-opening contest thanks to, in part, a scorching 19-for-25 shooting performance in the second half.
* The Scarlet and Black received a pair of double-doubles from two upperclassmen. Senior and LSU transfer Garrett Green made his official Aztec debut and promptly recorded 14 points and a game-high 11 boards. Junior Chase Tapley, meanwhile, went off for a game-high 20 points, career-high 11 rebounds, six assists and three steals.
* Sophomore and Washington State transfer Xavier Thames made a nice debut as well, posting 16 points, a career-high-matching four rebounds and a personal-record eight assists.
* Sophomore guard Jamaal Franklin (suspension) is expected to suit up for the Aztecs Saturday.
Nation's Best Coach
* As the Celebration of Championships continues at Viejas Arena, San Diego State will present head coach Steve Fisher with his 2011 Naismith National Coach of the Year Award. The ceremony comes 24 hours after the school unveiled its 2011 MWC regular-season title banner, its MWC tournament championship banner, and a third recognizing its Sweet 16 appearance.
In-Season Events
* The Basketball Travelers Classic represents the seventh straight season in which the Aztecs have participated in a multi-team in-season event.
* The Aztecs have won six straight in these type of events and 18 of their last 19. Since 2005, SDSU is 19-2 in multi-team in-season events.
