SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior linebacker Logan Ketchum (Oak Park, Calif.) has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 first team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Ketchum, who is the first Aztec selected to the first team since offensive lineman Patrick Justman in 2006, is now eligible for Academic All-America honors, which will be announced in late November.
Ketchum has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.59 in English and previously has been tabbed to the Mountain West academic all-conference squad and is also a league scholar-athlete. In 2010, he earned the Malik Award for posting a perfect 4.0 semester GPA. He is a multi-time SDSU scholar-athlete and garnered the Aztecs' President's Award for High Academic Achievement.
The senior has been one of the team's starting outside linebackers the past two seasons, compiling 114 career tackles, including seven for a loss, a pair of sacks, four pass breakups, a forced fumble and a recovered fumble in 35 contests. In 2011, Ketchum was having the best year of his career with 39 tackles, highlighted by 4.5 stops behind the line scrimmage, before suffering a season-ending injury last week in the team's victory over New Mexico.
In order to be selected to the Capital One Academic All-District squad a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.30 cumulative GPA, must be a starter or important reserve on his team, must have complete one full calendar year at his current institution and must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
San Diego State will head out on the road for the first time this month when it takes on Colorado State on Saturday at 4 p.m. MT/3 p.m. PT in Ft. Collins, Colo.
