SAN DIEGO -
The No. 20 San Diego State men's soccer team lost a 3-0 decision to No. 19 Washington Sunday afternoon at SDSU Sports Deck. The loss dropped the Aztecs to 10-4-2 overall and 4-3 in Pac-12 Conference play, while the Huskies improved to 11-4-2 and 6-3.
Jacob Hustedt scored twice for UW (No. 19 by Soccer America) and Charlie Ranahan added another goal, while Brent Richards contributed two assists.
SDSU (No. 20 by College Soccer News) had the first scoring chance in the 24th minute after a Washington defender failed to clear the ball. San Diego State junior Abraham Villon (Garden Grove, Calif.) ended up with it, but put his 11-yard shot from the center was just right of the frame.
The Huskies pressured the Aztec net late in the first half (35:50) with Richards taking a 17-yard attempt on the right side that was stopped by SDSU redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Blake Hylen (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS).
UW got on the scoreboard in the 40th minute when Hustedt took a ball from Jamie Finch and hit it into the right corner from eight yards.
After Washington's Dylan Tucker-Gangnes nicked the crossbar on a flick in the 56th minute, San Diego State had a good look from just outside the box following a Husky foul in the 59th minute. Sophomore Miles Byass (Highland, Calif.) cleared the wall on the free kick, but it just went over the crossbar, keeping the hosts off the scoreboard.
UW tacked on an insurance goal in the 76th minute as Richards found Hustedt breaking toward the net. Hustedt then beat Hylen with a move and tucked it into the open net from five yards out.
Aztec redshirt senior Pedro Adan (San Diego/Preuss HS) tried to narrow the deficit in the 80th minute when he headed a corner kick by junior Jose Altamirano (San Diego/Southwest HS) left from 12 yards out.
Hustedt's shot from a tough angle in the 82 minute also deflected off the crossbar, but was easily cleared out by SDSU defender.
In the 87th minute, Richards touched a pass to Charlie Ranahan, who hit a 20-yard attempt into the upper-left corner for the final goal of the match for Washington.
Adan led San Diego State with two shots, while Altamirano, Byass, sophomore Casey Meuser (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Villon each had one attempt apiece.
Hylen (9-4-2) had six saves for the Aztecs. Hylen's counterpart Spencer Richey made one save to pick up his league-leading eighth shutout of the season.
