AZTECS VISIT COLORADO STATE & WYOMING IN CONFERENCE ACTION
San Diego State is back on the road this week as it travels to the Rockies for a pair of Mountain West matches. The Aztecs will be in action on Thursday, Oct. 27, when they visit Fort Collins, Colo., to face Colorado State at 7:00 p.m. (MT) at CSU's Moby Arena. SDSU will then move over to Laramie, Wyo., where it will take on conference foe Wyoming on Saturday, Oct. 29, in a contest scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. (MT) start at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
SERIES RECORDS
The Aztecs' all-time record against Colorado State stands at 14-31 since the teams met in the second round of pool play at the 1980 AIAW Championships Regionals in Santa Barbara. The Rams have won the last 20 matches in a row against the Aztecs and 29 of the last 30 contests between the teams. SDSU's last victory in the series came in 2002 in San Diego. The Aztecs are 8-14 vs. the Rams at home, 5-15 away and 1-2 at neutral sites.
San Diego State holds a 31-10 lead in its series with Wyoming since the teams first met in 1984. More recently, the Aztecs are 9-8 vs. the Cowgirls since the 2003 season including a 3-0 win in Peterson Gym in late September. The Aztecs are 19-1 vs. the Cowgirls in San Diego, 10-9 in Laramie and 2-0 on neutral courts. SDSU's has won two of its last three matches on the Cowgirls' home floor.
SHELTON SOLID UP FRONT
Sophomore Raegan Shelton continued her steady play of late, hitting .310 in SDSU's last three matches (Boise State, San Diego, UNLV). Against UNLV last Friday (Oct. 21), she tied her career highs of 21 kills and four blocks while setting a new personal best with 23.5 points. She had recorded a career-highs in those categories with 21 kills and 21.5 points at TCU on Oct. 6.
HANNASCH LEADS THE OFFENSE
Junior middle blocker Andrea Hannasch had a streak of seven straight matches in double figures in kills ended in the contest at San Diego last week (Oct. 18). She then recorded 14 kills, five blocks and a .385 hitting percentage vs. UNLV three days later. Over the past four matches she is hitting .427 while averaging 3.20 kills per set.
FOUCH ASSISTS
Setter Johnna Fouch averaged just over 13 assists per set in last week's four-set win over UNLV. She leads the conference in all games with an average of 11.07 assists per set while her league-match average of 11.90 is also the best in the Mountain West. Her overall assist average ranks 28th in NCAA Division I this week. Her 18 digs against UNLV last Friday (Oct. 21) tied her season high.
HARRIS AROUND THE BLOCK
Middle blocker Emily Harris, a sophomore transfer from Western Michigan, has started each of the last 14 matches after not appearing in SDSU's first five contests of the year due to injury. In SDSU's two matches last week she recorded seven total blocks in each. She averaged 1.56 blocks per set against San Diego and UNLV to bring her overall season average up to an even one block per set overall and 1.04 bps in league matches.
LUCKY 13
San Diego State has reached the 13-win plateau on the earliest date in the season since 2003. Based on its current W-L percentage, the Aztecs are on pace to win 19 matches, a mark not seen since the 2002 season when they finished 22-12. Since 2002, SDSU has won 18 matches in a season once (18-14 in 2003) and 16 in a season twice (16-14 in 2005 and 16-16 in 2010).
THE RECORD BOOK
A trio of Aztecs will make their marks in the SDSU career record listings before the end of the 2011 season. Libero Kristi Jackels' 1,195 digs is fourth on the career Aztec top 10. Third place is currently held by Juliana Cezar (1993-96) with 1,369 career digs. Sophomore setter Johnna Fouch has moved into the number-nine spot in career assists with 2,058. Former Aztec Melissa Stokes (1986-88) ranks eighth on the list with 2,239 assists. In addition, Andrea Hannasch is now 10th on the career blocks assists chart with 327. Ninth place is occupied by Angelica Jackson (1984-87) with 341.
AZTEC NOTES
Summer Nash appeared in two sets off the bench against UNLV last Friday (Oct. 21) and recorded nine kills, five digs and a block in helping SDSU win the third and fourth sets ... San Diego's win over Boise State on Oct. 15 was its fourth straight victory. It marked the Aztecs' longest win streak since the 2007 season when they won six in a row ... As a team San Diego State stands first service aces in all matches and leads the Mountain West in kills and assists in league matches.
