SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's tennis team picked up three victories in Malibu, Calif. on Friday. It was the second day of competition at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship on the campus of Pepperdine University.
In the consolation draw of singles play, Hunter Nicholas highlighted SDSU's three wins as he defeated 17th-seeded Alex Brigham of UCLA by the score of 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5). Freddy Gelbrich was also victorious, earning a 6-1, 6-1 win against UC Irvine's Eric Gast. Thorsten Bertsch, meanwhile, defeated Luis Gastao of UC Riverside, 6-3, 6-4. Andranik Khachatryan wasn't able to have the same success, as he dropped a 6-3, 3-6 (10-4) decision to Pacific's Ben Mirken.
In singles play, Derek Siddiqui's successful run came to an end after he dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to No. 1 seeded Sebastian Fanselow of Pepperdine. Javier Pulgar, the 14th-seed, was also unable to advance as he was on the wrong end of a 7-6, 6-3 decision to 17th-seeded Hugh Clarke of Pepperdine.
In doubles play, both of the remaining Aztec duos competing dropped their matches. Gelbrich and Nicholas were on the wrong end of an 8-4 decision to the third-seeded duo of Yannick Hanfmann and Daniel Nguyen of USC. Khachatryan and Siddiqui also dropped an 8-4 decision to Cal Poly's Jurgen De Jager and Brian McPhee.
