THIS WEEK
San Diego State will be in San Luis Obispo this weekend to take on the Cal Poly Mustangs in a pair of dual meets. On Friday, Oct. 21, the teams will square off at 3:00 p.m. at the Anderson Aquatic Center. On Saturday (Oct. 22) the Aztecs and Mustangs will get their dual meet underway at 10:00 a.m. The weekend was originally scheduled as the Cal Poly Invitational, but the other schools expected to attend were forced to cancel.
HEAD COACH Mike Shrader
San Diego State head coach Mike Shrader is in his fifth season with the Aztecs and has compiled a dual meet record of 52-13 (.800) during his tenure. Shrader was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year each of the past three seasons (co-coach in 2009). Including eight seasons as the head coach at Nevada, his career record stands at 141-25-1 (.847).
AZTEC CAPTURE DUAL MEET AT UNLV
In its first dual; meet of the season, San Diego State defeated UNLV, 171-124, on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Las Vegas. The Aztecs won 11 of the meet's 16 events led by Leona Jennings, who took first in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. Seven other individual won one event each while both relays were also captured by SDSU.
NEWCOMERS SHINE
A pair of Aztec newcomers wasted little time in making their marks as they won events with times that will enter the school's top 10 list. Junior Gemma Johnson, a transfer from the University of Sydney (Australia) won the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.56, third-best in school history. Freshman Taylor Lakey (Southridge HS in Beaverton, Ore.) took the 200 butterfly event in 2:04.80, a time that places fourth on the SDSU all-time top 10 chart.
RELAY MARK
In the Aztecs' opening dual meet of the year, the 200 medley relay quartet of Leona Jennings, Katelyn Weddle, Gemma Johnson and Stephanie Koch won the race in 1:44.42, a time that ranks as the seventh-fastest in school history.
MEIER DIVES IN
In the diving at UNLV, San Diego State's Kristen Meier was first in the three-meter board with a score of 319.30 and placed second in the one-meter with 276.80 points. Both of those results qualified her for the 2012 Zone E Meet to be held next March in Colorado Springs.
THE STREAK CONTINUES
San Diego State has a streak of 40 straight dual meet wins against non-conference opponents. The last loss to a non-MWC team was a defeat at North Texas on Nov. 17, 2006. In current head coach Mike Shrader's four seasons at SDSU, the Aztecs have not lost to a non-conference foe. SDSU has now won its last 24 dual meets dating back to the 2009-10 season. Its last loss came against Wyoming on Jan. 29, 2010, in Laramie.
UP NEXT
SDSU will host its first home action of the 2011-12 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 5, when Colorado State and UC Davis visit the Aztec Aquaplex for a double dual set to start at 12:30 p.m.
