The San Diego State women's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision at No. 16 Santa Clara Sunday afternoon at Buck Shaw Stadium. The loss puts the Aztecs at 5-5-3 on the season, while the Broncos improve to 7-1-4.

SCU struck first in the seventh minute as Cate Parchinski notched her second goal of the season. The goal came 49 second after her first shot was saved by Aztec goalkeeper Rachel Boaz. Sophia Huerta picked up the assist on the scoring play.

Just 10 seconds later, the score was 2-0 in favor of the home side as Huerta put one on goal from the top of the box. Her attempt, which was assisted by Julie Johnston, got past Boaz to put San Diego State in an early hole.

Santa Clara continued its scoring spree in the 18th minute when Johnston matched Huerta's effort with her eighth goal of the season. Meleana Shim had her shot saved by Boaz, but the rebound went to Johnston, who rattled the back of the net.

As for SDSU, it went more than 30 minutes between its first and second shot attempts. Carli Johnson recorded the Aztecs' first shot in the 8th minute and did not attempt another until the 38th minute when Sarah Halverson's shot sailed high. Haley Locker logged San Diego State's third shot in the 43rd minute, but it finished high.

In the second half, San Diego State enjoyed more scoring chances, but could not convert. Jensen Skinner posted the first shot of the second period in the 49th minute, but was stopped by Bronco goalkeeper Molly Mettler. A minute later off a Sophie Metz corner kick, Cat Walker had her header go high.

Later in the 59th minute, the Aztecs had another corner kick where Metz found Rachael McGlinchy. The junior's blast, however, went wide.

Santa Clara increased its lead to 4-0 in the 64th minute when the ball was played over the Aztec defense. Huerta found herself with a one-on-one situation and she put her shot past Megan Allaire, who entered the game at the start of the second half.

The Broncos struck just 20 seconds later as Huerta was at it again. Parchinski passed the ball from the center to the right where the forward found herself one-on-one with the Allaire again. As she did just moments earlier, Huerta deposited her shot into the net to give SCU a five-goal cushion.

Despite the deficit, San Diego State kept attacking; starting with Walker's shot in the 68th minute. Tiffany Hurst tried getting the Aztecs on the board in the 71st minute, but her attempt was high. Locker put a quality shot on goal in the 74th minute, but was stopped by Mettler.

SDSU earned a corner kick in the 76th minute and Mariah Helmer attempted to score, but her shot was blocked. Moments later, Locker tried to get one past Mettler, but she denied the visitors once again.

Walker had one more opportunity to prevent the shutout, but her shot in the 83rd minute was saved as the Broncos handed the Aztecs their fifth loss of the campaign.

San Diego State rebounded from a rough first half to outshoot Santa Clara, 12-8. The Aztecs also enjoyed a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks for the game with all seven coming in the final 45 minutes.

SDSU returns to action on Friday, Oct. 7, when it plays at TCU. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m. CT.
